Brisbane History in Brief -
1824 First settlement located at Redcliffe, Moreton Bay.
1825 Penal settlement established in Brisbane by Sir Thomas Brisbane, Governor of NSW (where the name came from.
1842 Moreton Bay district was open to free settlers.
1859 Queensland proclaimed new colony by its first Governor, Sir George Ferguson Bowen. Brisbane was declared its capital.
1880s Brisbane developed. Well-established buildings began to sprout in the city centre.
1890s disastrous floods and financial crisis put the city under pressure.
1925 1st October, Brisbane City Council was formed and Brisbane Day was born.
1957 First drive-in shopping centre opened at Chermside. Consumer culture began.
1959 Commercial television began transmission.
1967 Australian Aborigines achieved the same democratic rights as all other Australians.
1974 Cyclone Wanda terrorised Brisbane. All form of communication was cut off with outside world.
1982 Brisbane play host to the Commonwealth Games.
1988 Expo 88 held at Brisbane. Site that Expo was held later became South Bank Parkland.
